Technology Incubation Program
Overview
The University has established a Technology Business
Incubation Program to assist and accelerate the successful establishment
and development of entrepreneurial companies. Incubator space is available
at the University of Connecticut’s Storrs, Farmington (Health Center) and
Avery Point Campuses.
Introduction
The University of Connecticut, Incubator Management Committee was
formed in January 2001 at the request of Chancellor John Petersen and
charged with developing recommendations and policies to govern the
formation and management of all incubator company activities at the
University, including the branch campuses and the Health Center. The
Committee, which consisted of scientists and administrators from both
Storrs and Farmington, delivered its report (Report of the Incubator
Management Committee, University of Connecticut) in July 2001 and it was
later discussed, accepted and approved by Philip Austin (President) and
senior administrators.
In essence the report welcomed the establishment of an incubator
program at the University as a vehicle to enrich student educational
experiences, commercialize technology and invigorate the economic
development of the region. Furthermore the Committee recommended that the
Incubator Program should be seen as an integral component of the
University's strategic planning and made a number of additional
recommendations as to how the program should be managed in the future.
Current Progress
Dr. Ian Hart was appointed to the position of Director, Industrial
Initiatives in June 2002 and initial discussions have shown that the
University of Connecticut has the willingness and potential to provide the
support and services necessary to house and establish a successful
Technology Incubator Program. All of the following are a possibility:
- Access to computer and library facilities.
- Laboratory/office accommodation.
- Basic services, utilities, etc.
- Student employees/internships.
- Faculty consultation - by arrangement.
- Business advice.
- Secretarial/clerical support (at Storrs).
Available Space
(a) BioScience Complex (Storrs)
This is brand new laboratory space available as part of the new BioScience
Complex which also houses the Agricultural Biotechnology Laboratory and
the Center for Regenerative Biology. It consists of 5 laboratory
units (~550 sq. ft. each) with an
office (~100 sq. ft.) attached to each. In addition there are two
conference rooms (one large, one small), a lunch room and one clerical
office to support the companies. Access to the new greenhouse facility is
a possibility if required.
(b) Building 4 (UConn Health Center, Farmington)
This is an older, recently vacated building consisting of 9 laboratories
(~300 sq. ft. each), 9 offices (~70 sq. ft. each) and 4 miscellaneous
rooms.
(c) Former Administration Building - third floor (Avery Point)
This consists of 14 offices (approx. 256 sq. ft. each) which could be
remodeled to accommodate potential computer or software companies.
Additional laboratory space is also available at Avery Point.
(d) Depot Campus (Storrs)
There are a number of unused buildings on the Depot Campus that are in
poor shape and require renovation. This would have to be discussed and
negotiated with the University.
